This Essay discusses the role of the military in land
defense. The Essay examines this history of the domestic employment of military
forces from the beginning of the republic through the pre-9/11 era. It then
goes on to examine how the military has been employed to provide land
defense in post-9/11 America. The Essay discusses the potential dangers posed
by the use of the regular military forces in the domestic arena. It concludes
that such use may impair US military effectiveness abroad, as well as undermine
domestic civil liberties.
